How to Replace Stove Door Rope

Replacing a worn stove-door rope can help restore an even door seal when carried out with the correct kit and according to your appliance manufacturer’s instructions. Work only on a completely cold stove and use a replacement rope that matches the original size and profile.

Before you begin

Check the stove manual for model-specific instructions. You will usually need the correct replacement rope, suitable stove-rope adhesive if required by your appliance, a scraper or brush for the channel, scissors or cutters, and gloves. Make sure the appliance is cold and the work area is clean.

1. Remove the old rope

Carefully lift the old seal out of the door channel. Remove loose fibres and old adhesive without damaging the channel or door finish. A clean channel gives the new rope the best chance of seating evenly.

2. Check the channel and replacement rope

3. Apply adhesive as directed

Use only an adhesive suitable for stove rope and follow the product instructions for the correct amount, placement and curing time. Apply it in manageable sections so the rope can be pressed into the channel evenly.

4. Fit the rope without stretching it

Press the rope gently into the channel, working around the door. Keep it even and avoid pulling it tight. At the join, trim the rope neatly so the ends meet without a large gap or overlap.

5. Let the adhesive cure and check the door

Allow the adhesive to cure exactly as directed. Then check that the door closes normally and that the rope sits evenly in the channel. If the door is hard to shut, do not force it; recheck that the size, profile and positioning are correct.

Can I light the stove straight after fitting new rope?

Follow the adhesive and appliance manufacturer’s instructions. Do not use the stove until the adhesive has cured as specified.

Should I replace only the damaged section?

Replacing the whole door seal usually provides the most even result, subject to your appliance manufacturer’s guidance.

What if the door will not close after fitting?

Do not force it. Check whether the rope is the correct size and profile, whether it has been stretched or bunched, and whether the channel is clean. Ask for fitment support if you are unsure.
