A stove rope — also known as a fire rope, stove door gasket, or woodburner door seal — is a woven glass fibre or ceramic fibre cord that forms an airtight seal between the door and the body of your solid fuel appliance. This seal performs two critical functions: it prevents combustion gases and smoke from escaping into your room, and it controls the amount of air entering the firebox, which directly governs how efficiently your stove burns.
Over time, the intense heat from regular use causes the rope to compress, harden, and lose its flexibility. A worn seal allows uncontrolled air into the firebox, causing your fuel to burn too fast, reducing heat output, and increasing fuel costs. Replacing a worn seal with a fresh stove rope kit is one of the most cost-effective maintenance tasks you can perform on any woodburner.
How to Tell if Your Door Seal Needs Replacing
The quickest way to check your seal is the Paper Test. With your stove completely cold, place a strip of paper between the door and the stove frame, close the door, and try to pull the paper out. If it slides out without resistance, your seal is no longer effective and should be replaced. You should also visually inspect the rope for signs of cracking, fraying, flattening, or visible gaps around the door frame.
We recommend inspecting your stove door seal at the start of every heating season and replacing it every one to two years, depending on how frequently you use your appliance.
Choosing the Right Stove Rope Size
Selecting the correct diameter is essential for an effective seal. To measure, remove a short section of your existing rope and measure across the cut end, or measure the width of the groove in your stove door. Our range covers all standard sizes:

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I install a new stove rope seal?
Remove the stove door and lay it flat on a protected surface. Strip away the old rope and clean the channel thoroughly with a wire brush to remove all traces of old adhesive. Apply a continuous bead of high-temperature rope adhesive into the groove. Press the new rope firmly into the channel, cutting it to the correct length and sealing both cut ends with end-sealing tape to prevent fraying. Allow the adhesive to cure for a minimum of 12 hours before closing the door and lighting the stove.
What size stove rope do I need?
Measure the diameter of your existing rope by cutting a small section and measuring across the cut face. Alternatively, measure the width of the channel in your stove door. If in doubt, contact us with your stove make and model and we will identify the correct size for you.
How often should I replace my stove door seal?
We recommend inspecting your seal annually at the start of the heating season. Most seals need replacing every one to two years, depending on usage. A worn seal reduces efficiency and can be a safety risk, so do not delay replacement once the Paper Test shows it is failing.
What is the difference between glass fibre and ceramic fibre rope?
Glass fibre rope is white, flexible, and suitable for temperatures up to approximately 550°C — ideal for the vast majority of domestic wood burners and multi-fuel stoves. Ceramic fibre rope is grey or white, denser, and rated for higher temperatures (up to 1260°C), making it suitable for industrial applications or very high-output stoves. For most domestic log burners, glass fibre rope is the correct choice.
Do you supply stove rope for specific brands?
Yes. We stock replacement kits for most major UK stove brands. Use the search box to find your stove make and model. If it is not listed, send us a message and we will source the correct specification for you.
