How to Measure Stove Rope
Choosing the correct stove rope starts with accurate measurement. A door seal that is too thin may not close tightly; one that is too thick can make the door hard to shut. This guide explains how to measure your existing seal before you choose a replacement.
What you need before you start
Wait until the stove is completely cold. You will need a ruler or tape measure, a clear photo of the existing rope and channel, and—if available—the stove make, model and manual. If the old rope has deteriorated badly, measuring the channel as well as the rope is useful.
1. Measure the rope diameter, not its flattened width
Stove rope is normally sized by its diameter. Cut or lift a small section of the old rope and measure straight across the round profile. Do not measure the flattened surface of an old, compressed seal: this can make the rope appear wider and lead to the wrong replacement size.
2. Measure the length around the door
Measure the full channel where the seal sits, following the route around the door. If possible, measure the old rope before removing it and compare this with the channel length. A replacement kit should give you enough rope to complete the seal cleanly; avoid stretching the rope while measuring.
3. Check the rope profile and the fixing method
Some stoves use round rope, while others use a flatter or shaped gasket. Check whether the existing seal is secured with stove rope adhesive and follow your appliance manufacturer’s fitting guidance. Matching the original profile is just as important as choosing the right diameter.
4. Use the stove make and model as a second check

Can I use a thicker stove rope?
Do not assume that thicker is better. An oversized rope can prevent the door from closing correctly. Use the size specified by the stove manufacturer or match the original seal as closely as possible.
What if the old rope is flattened?
Use the rope channel, appliance manual and stove make/model as additional checks. A flattened seal is not a reliable guide to the original diameter by itself.
Should I replace the whole door seal?
